Renovations – Setting up

October 13, 2017 8:53 pm

The last coat of Nikotinsperre (nicotine blocker) paint applied, the rooms finally smell good, and we are ready to arrange our stuff in the space. How to divide our various work areas – pattern making & cutting, sewing, soldering, assembly, programming, documenting. And the public “shop” space, where people should feel welcome and comfortable to […]

Renovations – Furniture shopping

October 12, 2017 8:03 pm

We spent the day driving around Berlin picking up couch, chairs, couch table, kitchen cupboard, eating table, wood to build our large work table top and kitchen counter. Still in need of a fridge, one more industrial lamp shade and light bulbs.

Renovations – The Move!

October 10, 2017 8:45 pm

We packed everything in boxes and hired two helpers with a van to help move all our stuff from Mika’s home living room studio space to the shop. It took us just over 2 hours to pack, drive and unpack. Cost about 200 Euro.

Renovations – Recycling

October 7, 2017 8:06 am

Renting a van and driving around Berlin can take most of the day. Today we picked up a sofa chair and recycled the leftovers from renovating the space. Metal, plastics, wood and cables… Now the space is empty, ready to be cleaned and we can move our stuff in!

Sustainability Motivations

October 5, 2017 3:52 pm

The following is an attempt to get more specific on the environmental sustainability items we want to address with our KOBA Tailor Shop. 1) Our sustainability motivations 2) Hopeful outcomes 3) A walk through a concrete example of how we might get to these outcomes When writing up our project proposal for the WEARsustain grant […]

Renovations – Day 5

October 2, 2017 6:44 pm

The white paint is yellow, especially in the places where the latex paint peeled off. Multiple coats in these areas are making little difference. Acceptance of interim style. Somehow matches the raw ceilings. The smell of smoke is 70% gone. We hope still just clinging to the Bauschutt (building rubble) lying on the floor. Looking […]

Renovations – Day 4

October 1, 2017 11:47 pm

Today we painted! We were told so that the paint will stick to the existing coat of latex paint we must think down the paint and do a thin first coat to as a base for it to stick to. Then a second non-diluted coating. Finishing touches:

Renovations – Day 3

September 30, 2017 11:44 pm

Mika and Ingo arrived by Lastendrad (cargobike) from Hellweg with a 10l bucket of paint and other missing supplies. We wanted to start painting today but spent 4 people all day cleaning cigarette smoke residue off the latex coated walls of the second room! Joreg used his laser measuring tool to make us a floor-plan:

Renovations – Day 2

September 28, 2017 11:20 pm

Tearing down the ugliest of cables, filling holes and getting ready to wash and paint the walls. Added our name to the post box:

Renovations – Day 1

September 27, 2017 7:57 pm

We started our first day of renovations by scraping the many very loose layers of paint off the biggest wall in the space. Very satisfying work, but so much surface area to cover! Half way in we paused and were torn whether or not we should leave the “putz” (plaster) and paint it white, or […]

How much should it cost?

How much should these commission order cost? It will be good if it is affordable for people of various background, and not only rich tech savvy people. One idea is to list the price as “necessary components cost + hours of work”. The rate for one hour can be decided: – each customer decide how […]

Illiciting commissions from customers?

September 20, 2017 10:14 pm

Even though we have not even found our shop space yet, we are talking through all the details of setting up shop and planning all our preparation work. This includes speculating how we will best attract potential customers to our shop and illicit from them these “novel ideas” we talked about in the last post. […]

Searching and Discussing

September 19, 2017 11:28 pm

As the search for shop space is proving rather slow, we are using this time to unravel our ideas that are rolled up in this “shop” concept. Through discussing them in ever greater detail, we’re making sure we’re both on the same page, but also clarifying fuzzy ideas, such as: – what are the core […]

Where to locate our shop?

September 14, 2017 10:27 am

We have been looking for a shop front (ladenraum) in Prenzlauerberg, Friedrichshain, Neukölln and Wedding. Out of those, we seem to find Wedding and Neukolln more interesting, as it feels multi-culture and had diverse community. We found a really nice ladenraum on Utrechter strasse in Wedding, which is a quiet street not so far from […]

Shop Hunting

August 28, 2017 11:37 am

We are torn between the outskirt community-feel of Wedding and the centralized playfulness of Neukölln. If our E-Textile Tailor Shop were in your city, where would you expect or want to find it? name, and briefly describe that area.

To fantasize…

August 16, 2017 11:32 am

“Wearable Technology becomes a means of releasing us to fantasize about ourselves, our lives and our world” In the introductory pages of Oppi Untracht’s Jewelry encyclopedia titled “Jewelry Concepts and Technology” I came across this passage that talks of jewelry’s role in how we present ourselves and fantasize about who we might be. I have […]
